Women’s Super League: talking points from the weekend’s action

Ruthless Chelsea have title in their sights

Ruthless is a word that has been bandied around many a time to describe this Chelsea side. Their first-half display against Everton encapsulated why. Five shots on target, five goals scored were the stats at the break as the Blues eventually cruised to a 7-0 victory. Emma Hayes’s options in attack are enviable. Guro Reiten and Sam Kerr got one apiece, a partnership up front that has defined their season. When Kerr was forced off early, on came Pernille Harder to score with her first touch. The Denmark captain has been missing for much of this campaign with a long-term hamstring issue but announced her return in style with a double and a player-of…

Rio 2016: Sundhage proud of underdog Sweden

Pia Sundhage was left emotional after guiding Sweden to the final of the Rio 2016 women s football tournament on Tuesday.

Sweden provided the shock of the competition when they knocked out two-time defending champions United States who were coached by Sundhage in 2008 and 2012  in the quarter-finals on penalties last week.

They were the underdogs once again when they tackled hosts Brazil in the semi-finals, but held their nerve to seal a second shoot-out win.

Now Sundhage is on the verge of winning a third straight Olympic gold medal as a coach, and she could not be prouder of her players.

It is very emotional. I have been to the Olympic finals in Beijing [2008] and London [2012] but then I had a team everybody expected to do well, she said.

Too soon to say who will win Euro 2008, insists Loew

Germany coach Joachim Loew insisted Tuesday it is too early to say who will win Euro 2008 despite strong opening performances from the Germans, Portugal and the Netherlands.

After his side opened their Euro 2008 campaign with an impressive 2-0 win over Poland on Sunday, Germany are living up to their pre-tournament billing as co-favourites.

But Holland hammered world champions Italy 3-0 in Geneva on Monday while Portugal enjoyed a 2-0 win over Turkey on Saturday leaving Loew insisting it is too soon to say who will be crowned champions of Europe in Vienna on June 29.

We can t put teams up on a pedestal yet, it is too soon, insisted Loew at Germany s Euro 2008 base in Tenero.

Portugal were impressive in the first game, we had a satisfying result and t…

Manchester City 2017-18: Guardiola´s masterpiece about more than money

Pep Guardiola has spent €526.3million to make Manchester City Premier League champions.

It is an outlay that dwarfs €204m during his title-winning run at Bayern Munich and €342m over a glorious and defining four-year reign at Barcelona.

When City broke their transfer record by paying Aymeric Laporte s €65m release clause at Athletic Bilbao in January, Guardiola became a €1billion manager.

All that happened when Manchester United remarkably lost to West Brom eight days on from their party-pooping exploits was the team with more resources than anyone else won the league. What s the big deal? Nothing special.

I am a lucky guy, said Guardiola when pressed on this familiar topic ahead of the 3-2 derby reverse.

When the people say you win b…

Happy New Year to all – what do we want in 2009?

A New Year and new hope for football fans around the world. I would like to take this opportunity to wish a very happy New Year to all SoccerNews readers. I want to thank you for reading and commenting on the site, it is really appreciated. We might not often agree, but we all share a love of this great game of ours.

So what do we all hope for in 2009? Here are ten things that I wish for:

I would love Watford to go on a long unbeaten run and find a way into the Championship play-offs and promotion back to the Premier League.
I would love my own team, , to go on an unbeaten run between now and the end of the season and find our way off the bottom and up the Wiltshire League Division Two table.
I would love referees to stop making really poor decisions that affect the out…

Vikings vs Bears Monday Night Football Picks and Predictions: Minny Sends Chicago Packing

It’s Week 15 in the NFL, which means we thankfully get our final primetime viewing of the Chicago Bears as they host the Minnesota Vikings on Monday night. This is the fourth time the 4-9 Bears will get a primetime slot, although, to be fair, Minnesota hasn’t exactly been playing must-watch football itself.

However, the Vikes are on the playoff bubble and NFL betting lines have them installed as 5.5-point road favorites for this contest.

Here are our best free Vikings vs. Bears NFL picks and predictions for Monday Night Football on December 20.

Derrick Henry TNF Spotlight: Player Props for Thursday Night Football Week 11

This week, my NFL player props spotlight is going to keep it simple. Just as Tennessee Titans coach Mike Vrabel will keep it simple.

Just like famed early-2000s rapper Obie Trice kept it simple for his entire rap career (which may or may not have spanned a whole four years):

“Real name. No gimmicks.”

The real name we’re speaking is King Henry, and there are no gimmicks behind what Vrabel will do tonight — run Henry all game long.

My colleagues Jason Logan and Josh Inglis both had a cheesy flavor to their Titans vs. Packers betting preview and TNF player prop picks — but in this space, I’m all about Derrick Henry props.

So let’s Escalade to the nearest Super 8 and get straight to business, as my free NFL picks like the Titans’ m…

Despite a sizable gap between these teams in the standings, the NFL odds for this NFC South duel aren’t too far apart, with the Falcons installed as 3-point road favorites. Here are my best free NFL picks for Falcons vs. Panthers on December 17.

Watford look to Claudio Ranieri to repeat the job he did at Sampdoria

“Dilly-ding, dilly-dong!” Watford fans are going to hear that phrase a lot over the coming months. Claudio Ranieri returned to the Premier League this week after Watford took the decision to relieve Xisco of his duties following their 1-0 defeat to Leeds on Saturday. Watford-manager-sacking season arrives earlier each year it seems.

The Pozzo family have made 15 managerial appointments since they took over Watford in June 2012 and dispensed with Sean Dyche. Xisco is the latest boss to be sent packing even though he won promotion from the Championship at the first time of asking and took the club to 15th in the Premier League, four points above the relegation zone. Granted, they have lost four of their first seven matches back in the Prem…
